Ancient Swiss New Year Tradition Returns to New Glarus
A rare Swiss New Year tradition from Appenzell Ausserrhoden brings bells, yodeling, and Groscht costumes to downtown New Glarus, beginning at the Swiss Center on Jan. 10.
A rare and deeply rooted Swiss New Year tradition will return to New Glarus on Saturday, Jan. 10, when Silvesterchlausen performers fill the village with bells, yodeling, and striking costumes during an afternoon procession.
The event begins at 2 p.m. at the Swiss Center of North America and typically lasts about an hour. While there is no fixed end time, organizers say anyone downtown between 2 and 3 p.m. will almost certainly encounter the procession without needing to follow it from stop to stop. Performers will appear at various locations as they move through the village.
