Blizzard Warning Issued for New Glarus Area
The National Weather Service upgraded a winter storm warning to a Blizzard Warning for much of southern Wisconsin, including New Glarus and Green County, with heavy snow, 45 mph winds and dangerous travel expected through Monday afternoon.
A Blizzard Warning has been issued for New Glarus and much of southern Wisconsin as a powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds and near-whiteout conditions through Monday afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan upgraded its earlier warning Sunday evening, forecasting heavy snowfall and wind gusts up to 45 mph that could create dangerous travel conditions across Green County and surrounding areas.
Forecasters say snow will move into the region after 9 p.m. Sunday, with periods of heavy snowfall possible overnight. Snowfall rates could reach about one inch per hour at times as the storm spreads from west to east across southern Wisconsin.
Total snowfall in the New Glarus area is expected to reach between five and ten inches by Monday afternoon. Strong northerly winds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected to create widespread blowing and drifting snow.
Those conditions could lead to visibility dropping below one-quarter mile at times, meeting the definition of blizzard conditions. The worst conditions are expected late Sunday night through Monday morning, which could make the Monday commute extremely hazardous.
The National Weather Service warns that travel could become very difficult or impossible at times due to blowing snow and reduced visibility. Officials advise residents to avoid travel unless it is an emergency.
If travel cannot be avoided, drivers are encouraged to carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if they become stranded.
Snow is expected to continue into Monday morning before tapering off early in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain cold, with a high near 21 degrees Monday and wind chill values between zero and 5 degrees.
Conditions will remain bitterly cold Monday night as skies begin to clear and temperatures drop to around 2 degrees, with wind chills falling between minus 10 and zero.
Sunshine is expected to return Tuesday, though it will remain cold with a high near 22 degrees.
