Charging Up New Glarus: Who Pays When EV Demand Arrives?
As electric vehicles become more common, New Glarus is weighing how public charging fits into local utilities, tourism, infrastructure costs and the question of who should pay as demand grows.
New Glarus operates its own electric utility, part of Wisconsin’s long public power tradition that continues in dozens of communities statewide. That local control matters as electric vehicles become more common and as visitors who drive EVs increasingly expect charging stations much the same way many expect Wi-Fi: available, easy to use and close to where they’re spending time and money.
Where Charging Stands Today
Right now, public EV charging options in and around New Glarus remain limited, especially for drivers who need faster charging while traveling. Within the village, the Chalet Landhaus Inn had one, but it has been removed. The station provided Level 2 charging speeds. There are no other options at the moment.
