But there I was in the wee hours of Wednesday, talking to Green County clerk Arianna Voegeli trying to find out why Green County remained among the last counties in Wisconsin to report its election returns. Despite what must have been a chaotic and frustrating night, Voegeli answered the phone. She didn’t sound annoyed — and no one could have blamed her if she had. She wasn’t defensive or difficult. She was positive, helpful and still busy doing her job, trying to plot a way forward for the county through a problem caused by software, not people. It also underscored how much work local clerks and municipal employees put into every election, much of it after most of us have gone to bed. With the server problem still unresolved Wednesday morning, clerks from towns and villages across Green County had to take their individual election results to the courthouse in person so the county could finish compiling the vote totals. It certainly wasn’t the election night anyone planned for, but the people responsible for making the process work kept at it. I can’t speak for election workers everywhere, but in Green County we are fortunate to have people who take that responsibility seriously. Tuesday night was a reminder that when technology fails, there are still good people behind the scenes doing whatever is necessary to get the job done. ### What We’re Working On **New Glarus alum Raine Stern** is returning to Wisconsin for several concerts, and we’ll catch up with the Class of 2016 musician. We’ll find out where her career has taken her since New Glarus and what she has planned for her return home. The **Patty Adamson Memorial Fundraiser** returns Sept. 3, bringing the community together for another year. We’re talking with the organizers about the event, the cause it supports and the mission behind their work. We’re having a little fun with the **Wisconsin-Illinois rivalry** by counting down 10 things about Wisconsin that seem to bug our neighbors to the south. Consider it a lighthearted look at some of the differences that make living on either side of the state line interesting. **New Glarus marks its anniversary Saturday**, and we’re looking back at the remarkable journey made by the settlers who founded the community. Their voyage carried them across the Northern Hemisphere before they finally arrived in the place that would become New Glarus. The **New Glarus football season** is almost here, and we’re talking with coach DJ Schuett about what to expect from the Glarner Knights. Our season preview will look at the returning players, newcomers, strengths and challenges facing the team in 2026. The village’s **downtown Wi-Fi system** is moving closer to reality, and we’re digging into more details about how it will work. We’ll explain where coverage is expected, what the system will offer and what residents and visitors can expect once it is installed. **National Nonprofit Day is Monday**, giving us a good reason to take a closer look at the organizations serving New Glarus. We’re finding out which local nonprofits are among the largest and what roles they play in the community. The **New Glarus football field** has now been in use for several years, giving us a chance to see how the major investment is aging. We’ll take a closer look at how the field is holding up and whether it is performing as expected. Fall sports are getting underway, and we have **more New Glarus season previews** on the way. We’ll look ahead to volleyball, cross country, boys soccer and swimming and talk with coaches about their teams and expectations for the season. Some **issues at the new New Glarus dog park** have surfaced and are now being addressed. Work on the roof is underway, with gutters and exterior painting among the next items on the list. The owners say the project remains on schedule for a November opening. That reopening will mark the return of a business New Glarus has now been without for several years. The hotel’s main restaurant closed in 2021 after struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ticino’s Pizzeria, which continued operating on the first floor, closed the following year. Since then, one of the most prominent buildings in the center of downtown has largely sat quiet while plans were developed for its next chapter. That is part of what makes watching the work progress so exciting. After several years with such an important downtown property largely quiet, seeing roofing crews overhead is about more than a new roof. It is another step toward getting one of New Glarus’ most recognizable landmarks — and some of downtown’s energy — back.
