It’s April 1st, which means newspapers, websites, radio stations and assorted smart alecks everywhere are once again tempted to get a little too clever for their own good. We briefly considered joining the April Fool's Day tradition. For a moment, we kicked around the idea of announcing something wildly implausible yet just believable enough to cause a small amount of unnecessary local confusion. Then cooler heads prevailed.
So no, there is no plan to pave the Sugar River Trail and add a passing lane. Nor is there is any decision to relocate the Chalet of the Golden Fleece downtown and rename it the Chalet of the Bronze Cardigan. And no, the New Glarus Brewing Company will not announce that Spotted Cow will be sold in 7-ounce glass shorties called "mini moos." No, you won't read anything like that from us. In an age when real life already does a pretty good impression of satire, we figured the best course was to leave the prankery to others and simply offer you the far less dangerous novelty of straightforward local news.
What We’re Working On

New Glarus High School baseball season is here, and we’ll have a preview of the team, the players to watch, and what lies ahead for them this spring.
With the April 7 spring election quickly approaching, we will have complete local coverage to help you keep track of the races, the issues, and the results that matter.

There are also some big things kicking in the New Glarus business scene, and we will be sharing those details soon.
And for readers who enjoy local history, we’ll revisit a gruesome 1865 attack in New Glarus that once put our village in headlines across the Midwest.

What You May Have Missed

Something We Noticed
Often now when someone says something nice about Spotted Cow beer in public, there is almost always someone who will say, “Moon Man is better,” or “It’s not even their best beer.”
This is not really about beer, is it? It's the same thing as saying, “Marvel movies are all the same,” “Taylor Swift is mid,” or “[insert book title here] is better than the movie.” The point is not to add insight. The point is to sound more intelligent and discerning than the crowd.
And here is the problem: it has become so predictable among craft beer drinkers that it now does the opposite. It's not edgy. It's not sophisticated. It is the most rehearsed line in the room.
Yes, you are allowed to prefer Moon Man. It's a very good beer. But when the first impulse is to swat away the popular thing just to look cooler than the people enjoying it, please don't.
