Extreme Cold Forces New Glarus School Closure Today

New Glarus School District will be closed Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, due to dangerously cold weather moving into the area.

District officials also announced that all activities scheduled for the evening of Friday, Jan. 23, including athletic practices and competitions, are canceled as a precaution.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, an Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect from midnight to 1 p.m. Friday, followed by a Cold Weather Advisory from 1 p.m. Friday through noon Saturday. Forecasters noted that some areas could be upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning again Friday night, depending on how conditions develop.

Wind chills between minus 20 and minus 30 degrees are expected during the advisory period, with actual air temperatures ranging from minus 10 to minus 20 degrees. The National Weather Service warned that prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to frostbite in minutes and urged residents to take precautions.

Community members are encouraged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on neighbors who may be vulnerable to the cold, including older adults and those without reliable heat.

Families should continue to monitor official communications from the New Glarus School District and weather updates from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
