Gary J. Elmer, Farmer Turned Longtime Trucker, Dies at 82
New Glarus native farmed until 1984 before logging more than 2 million miles as a truck driver, while building a life centered on family, Euchre nights, bowling, and pride in his children and grandchildren.

Gary J. Elmer, age 82 passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at his home. He was born on September 29, 1943 in Monroe, WI the son of J. Herman and Lillian (Wenger) Elmer. Gary graduated from New Glarus High School in 1961. He was united in marriage to Carol Hustad on August 8, 1964 at the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus. Gary farmed until 1984 when he then went to work for Par Car, he would later go on to drive truck for Tom Gullickson Trucking for over 23 years, retiring with over 2 million miles driven. Gary enjoyed playing Euchre with Carol and their card club and bowling. He was very dedicated to and proud of his children and grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his sons Brian (Melissa) Elmer and Kevin Elmer, grandchildren Morgan (Phil) Harrison, Lukkah Elmer, and Lillian Elmer, and great-grandchildren Skylar and Ryker. He is further survived by a brother-in-law Duane Hustad, nieces, and nephews.
