New Glarus’ Original March Heroes: The 1932 Team That Carried a Village
Long before the 2019 title team, New Glarus’ 1932 boys made a March run for the ages, carrying a village of 1,010 into Wisconsin’s one-class state tournament against far bigger schools.
As March Madness turns the country’s attention to the NCAA tournament and before the basketball season moves into its last, breathless stretch, it might make sense to give pause and remember one of the greatest teams in New Glarus boys basketball history that made its own unforgettable March run nearly a century ago.
Before the boys of 2019 brought home New Glarus’ first state championship, the team most often recalled in the homes and hallways of New Glarus when tournament season rolled around was the 1932 squad. For decades, it stood as the old standard in local basketball lore, the village’s original March heroes.
