New Glarus Rally Draws Demonstrators to Highway 69
Organizers estimated about 250 people took part in Saturday’s New Glarus “No Kings” rally, part of a broader day of demonstrations in southern Wisconsin, as local participants said they wanted small towns represented too.
A local “No Kings” rally drew demonstrators to the intersection of Highway 39 and 69 stoplights in New Glarus on Saturday morning, with organizer Jeanne Meier saying the event was meant to show that concern about the country’s direction is not limited to larger cities. Public promotions for the rally listed an 11 a.m. start and tied the New Glarus event to a wider day of protests in communities including Belleville, Mount Horeb, Albany and Monroe.
Meier, a New Glarus resident involved with Hands Off New Glarus, said the local motivation was as much about community values as politics. “I don’t want it to be just about Madison and Manhattan and other places,” Meier said. “I want people to know that there are people in small communities that have similar concerns.”
