New Glarus students are headed back to competition later this month after earning teamwork awards at a regional FIRST LEGO League event, with two local teams advancing to sectionals following strong performances in robotics and research.

New Glarus students are heading back to competition later this month after a strong showing in a competition that blends robotics, research, teamwork and a unique philosophy that values collaboration as much as competition.

New Glarus currently fields three teams and a total of 11 students in what is called FIRST LEGO League, according to Peter Bertling, a New Glarus High School science teacher and advisor for the program. The Legitimate Business Penguins, an eighth-grade team, and two mixed-age teams — Dark Dungeons and Rocky Cats, made up of students in grades five through seven — all competed at a regional event in Janesville on Nov. 22.
