Storms, Heavy Rain Possible Friday in New Glarus
National Weather Service warns of possible strong thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall Friday into Friday night across southern Wisconsin, including New Glarus and Green County.
Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon and again Friday evening and night across southern Wisconsin as a cold front moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee.
Rain is expected to begin earlier in the day Friday, with periods of heavier rainfall possible as the system develops and moves across the area.
Forecasters say the main threats with Friday’s storms include large hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorms may occur off and on throughout the day, with a renewed round of storms expected from mid- to late Friday evening and into the overnight hours.
In addition to severe weather potential, heavy rainfall could create localized flooding concerns. The National Weather Service says areas northwest of U.S. Highway 151 have the best chance of seeing more than an inch of rain during the event. New Glarus sits near the edge of that corridor.
Because the ground remains frozen in many locations, runoff from heavy rain may not be absorbed easily. This could lead to rising water levels in rivers and creeks, along with standing water in roadside ditches and other low-lying areas.
Forecasters encourage residents to monitor updated forecasts throughout the day Friday and have a reliable way to receive weather alerts if conditions worsen.
Storm chances are expected to diminish early Saturday morning as the system moves out of the region.
