Sugar River Wrestlers Battle in Lake Geneva

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. – The Sugar River Wrestling cooperative sent seven varsity wrestlers into a deep, talent-heavy field Saturday at the Badger Scramble at Badger High School, gaining valuable mat time and multiple top-five finishes against programs from across Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Competing as the Belleville–Monticello–New Glarus cooperative, Sugar River finished 13th overall with 62 team points in a 15-team tournament won by Kaukauna. The event featured full varsity brackets across all 14 weight classes and ran nearly eight hours, testing both depth and endurance.

Senior Lukas Loshaw led the way for Sugar River with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds, scoring 19 team points. Loshaw opened the day with three straight pins, advancing deep into the championship bracket before falling to eventual finalists in the closing rounds.

At 150 pounds, senior Ashlin Mihlbauer put together a strong tournament, placing fifth and contributing 16 points. Mihlbauer won four of five matches, including two pins early in the championship rounds and a decisive 9-2 decision in the fifth-place match.

Freshman Brooks Krauss also reached the podium at 126 pounds, finishing fifth with 10.5 team points. Krauss rebounded after early losses to earn a technical fall in the fifth-place match, showing resilience in a competitive bracket.

Bronko Baer added an aggressive performance at 157 pounds, finishing ninth. The freshman recorded multiple bonus-point wins, including a technical fall and two pins, accounting for 8.5 team points.

Corey Keyes rounded out the scoring for Sugar River at heavyweight, placing 10th at 285 pounds and earning three points. Keyes closed the tournament with back-to-back wins in the consolation rounds after facing top-seeded opponents earlier in the day.

After the match, Sugar River Wrestling Coach Peter Swenson said, "They wrestled well, but we were shorthanded due to illness and couple injuries."

The Badger Scramble provided Sugar River with a demanding test midway through the season, with wrestlers facing ranked opponents and programs known for postseason success. The cooperative continues conference and tournament action in the weeks ahead as the postseason approaches.
