Twas the Night Before Christmas

A familiar holiday poem gets a local twist in New Glarus, blending Swiss tradition, small-town charm and a wink of humor into a uniquely Glarner take on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

Twas the Night Before Christmas

’Twas the night before Christmas in New Glarus so still,
Not a bell in the steeple, not a horn on the hill;
The jukeboxs around town had gone dark without warn,
And no choir was warming the cold Christmas morn.

The Swiss Church stood quiet in snow soft and deep,
Its carillon silent, as if fast asleep;No yodel or polka, no waltz in three-four,
Just hush on 1st Street and along 4th and more.
