Wisconsin Officials Warn of Utility Scams, Data Breach Risks as Winter Heating Protections Begin
State officials are warning Wisconsin residents about a rise in utility impostor scams during the winter shut-off moratorium, urging people to watch for threats, pressure tactics, and unusual payment demands.
Wisconsin consumer protection officials are alerting residents to a surge in utility impostor scams and fraudulent data breach notifications now that the state’s winter moratorium on heating shut-offs took effect Nov. 1.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) said scammers routinely impersonate utility companies, claim payments are overdue and threaten immediate disconnection — even though state law prohibits utilities from cutting off residential heating service for nonpayment from Nov. 1 through April 15.
