There are bats inside the Chalet of the Golden Fleece, and the Village of New Glarus is preparing to address the problem at the historic museum.
An inspection Friday by AAAC Wildlife Removal found several areas of bat guano in a crawl space. The main attic, however, was found to be free of guano. Inspectors also identified open roof and ridge vents and roughly 300 feet of cracks, crevices and other areas that may need to be sealed to prevent bats from entering the building.
The contractor estimated bat-exclusion work at $2,585. An optional but “highly recommended” 80-foot ridge guard would add $1,200, bringing that work to $3,785. Spot cleaning of the crawl space was estimated at another $1,285.
Village staff is recommending that surplus funds be used to pay for the work because no money was specifically budgeted for bat removal at the Chalet in 2026. The Village Board is scheduled to consider the matter Wednesday, Sept. 16.
