Birdwatchers will have an opportunity to explore New Glarus Woods State Park during fall migration when the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance hosts a guided outing Sunday, Sept. 20, from 8 to 10 a.m. The event is open to birders of all skill levels.

The group will hike the south side of the park through mature woods and restored prairies while looking for migrating birds passing through the area. New Glarus Woods is also normally home to a variety of woodpeckers and songbirds, along with wildlife including deer, squirrels and turkeys.

Dave Kelly, a local resident and Wisconsin Master Naturalist, will lead the field trip. Participants should expect to walk approximately 1 to 3 miles at a pace comfortable for the group. Trails are wide and maintained, although portions are hilly and can be slippery or uneven. The route begins with a moderate downhill stretch of about one-quarter mile before becoming mostly flat to rolling.
