Bus Songs, Sock Hops and Farm Chores Fill Reunion Memories

What began as a 65th reunion for the New Glarus High School Class of 1961 became something larger Saturday, drawing alumni and spouses from across generations to trade stories of farm chores, school buses, dances, teachers and a New Glarus that looked very different from today.

Bus Songs, Sock Hops and Farm Chores Fill Reunion Memories

For a few hours Saturday, Oct. 10, the years seemed to fold together at Edelweiss Chalet Golf Country Club.

The gathering centered on the New Glarus High School Class of 1961 and its 65th reunion, but organizers opened the celebration to graduates and spouses from the classes of 1949 through 1972. That wider invitation brought together people whose school years stretched across more than two decades.

Mike Nevil prepared the food, but much of the afternoon’s flavor came from the stories around the room: riding buses to basketball games, milking cows before school, one-room schoolhouses, sock hops and the small freedoms and responsibilities that came with growing up in and around New Glarus.

Barb Anderson remembered being a cheerleader and traveling with the team.
