Community Update: 3/18/2026
March 18, 2026

Last week in this space I confidently wrote that spring was right around the corner. A few days later, southern Wisconsin was buried under a full-fledged blizzard. If you spent Monday digging out driveways, sidewalks and snowbanks, I would like to formally apologize for apparently jinxing the entire region. Punxsutawney Phil I am not.

The good news is that the snowbanks are shrinking, streets are back to normal, and the forecast is finally starting to look like the season we were all hoping for. Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 40s Thursday, around 60 on Friday and then into the mid-60s by Saturday, with a mix of sunshine returning to the area.

So, while winter delivered one last dramatic reminder that it still knows the address of New Glarus, the coming days should feel a lot more like spring. This time, I promise I’m not trying to get ahead of the weather — I’m just reading the forecast and hoping it behaves.

What We’re Working On

We’re digging into one of the most persistent legends in town: rumors that Al Capone, secret tunnels beneath the old New Glarus brewery, and rumors linking the site to Prohibition-era intrigue. How much of it is folklore and how much might be rooted in history?

Few traditions say Wisconsin quite like a Friday night fish fry. We’re taking a look at where the custom came from, why it endured and why it remains such a cornerstone of local culture in communities like New Glarus.

New Glarus High School students are bringing the acclaimed musical Hadestown to the stage this weekend. We’re previewing the show, its Broadway success and the work director Amy Doerfer and her students have put into the production.

Green County’s new administrator, Nic Owen, has officially stepped into the role. We’re looking at his first day on the job and what he hopes to accomplish in his new leadership position.

The Sugar River Raiders girls soccer team is preparing for the spring season. We’ll take a look at returning players, expectations for the year and what head coach John Ziperski sees ahead for the program.

With track and field returning to New Glarus High School, we thought it was the perfect time to catch up with Ashley Beutler-Schumacher. The former New Glarus standout went on to set records at the University of Wisconsin and became one of the program’s top steeplechase runners.

As the community raises funds for new pickleball courts, we’re examining why pickleball has exploded in popularity across the country. The story looks at participation trends and what the sport’s growth could mean for local recreation.

New Glarus is preparing for a new phase of downtown streetscape work. We’re breaking down what the project includes and what residents and visitors can expect as improvements move forward.

Spring is here, which means it’s tree care season. We’re talking to arborist Forrester Barry and his company Treekeeper to learn about the services they provide and how homeowners can keep their trees healthy.

Who are the 10 biggest employers and businesses in Green County? We’re taking a closer look at the companies that help drive the local economy.

We’re also stepping back into local history to explore the arrival of the railroad in New Glarus and the role of the famed “Limburger Special,” which once carried milk and cheese from the village to markets beyond.

The storm has passed, and sunlight now spills across a quiet landscape still blanketed in snow. It’s a reminder that after every winter’s fury comes the slow melt, the first signs of life, and the quiet promise that renewal is always on the way. – Photo by Sue Moen

Something We Noticed

News leaked this week that the Green Bay Packers have at least considered the idea of selling naming rights to Lambeau Field, and as you might imagine, the reaction across Wisconsin has been… spirited. But if it ever had to happen, we’d like to respectfully nominate a partner that might actually pass the Wisconsin sniff test: New Glarus Brewing Company. Imagine it for a moment — the cathedral of football becoming “Spotted Cow Stadium at Lambeau Field,” with nothing but New Glarus beer flowing from the taps on game day. No complicated national brand deals. Just Wisconsin’s team and Wisconsin’s favorite beer.

You could picture the announcements now: “Welcome to historic Spotted Cow Stadium, home of the Green Bay Packers.” Tailgates would practically run themselves. Two iconic Wisconsin brands together under one frozen tundra roof...well...if there was a roof. Of course, even New Glarus Brewing Company doesn’t make the kind of money to buy the naming rights to Lambeau Field. But a man can dream, can’t he?

Mobile Phone Users: Having Problems?

If you’ve noticed that you sometimes have to log back into New Glarus 360 when clicking a story link from Facebook, you’re not imagining things.
