Stewart Tunnel Repairs Near Start on Badger Trail
Wisconsin officials say construction to repair and reopen Stewart Tunnel could begin in 2026, advancing a long-awaited plan to stabilize the historic tunnel and restore a signature Badger State Trail landmark.
Wisconsin officials say long-awaited repair work on Stewart Tunnel near New Glarus is moving toward the construction phase, with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) now pointing to a construction start this year and an estimated completion in 2027. The project is intended to finally reopen one of the best-known features on the Badger State Trail after years of closure over falling rock hazards.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says $6.6 million was included in the 2023-25 state budget to repair and reopen the tunnel, and state building records show the project has advanced through design and construction approvals.
