Construction has started on Prairie Haus Phase II along Elmer Road in New Glarus, with heavy equipment arriving at the site last week and crews beginning clearing and grubbing Monday.
The work is the first major step in preparing the property for construction. Clearing removes trees, brush and other above-ground vegetation, while grubbing removes roots, stumps and other organic material below the surface so the site can be graded and prepared for excavation and building work.
As crews begin working deeper into the site, another closely watched part of the project could come into play. The Village Board approved a blasting permit earlier this month in case excavation encounters rock that cannot otherwise be removed. The permit does not mean blasting will be necessary; project representatives previously said contractors would first determine what conditions they encounter and could use mechanical removal where practical.
