Fall Flowers Bring a Fresh Look to New Glarus
Brenda Siegenthaler of Brenda’s Blumenladen shares the flowers, colors and simple design ideas that can carry New Glarus porches, patios, hanging baskets and planters from the heat of August into the first chilly nights of fall weather.
By mid-August, many summer flower containers have begun to show their age. Petunias may be stretched and tired, hanging baskets require almost constant watering, and a few hot, dry days can leave even carefully maintained planters looking worn.
That does not mean the outdoor decorating season is over. A new group of flowers, foliage plants and ornamental grasses begins arriving at local garden centers just as summer plantings start to fade.
“Mums and other fall colors begin arriving mid- to end of August,” said Brenda Siegenthaler, owner of Brenda’s Blumenladen in New Glarus.
Popular choices extend well beyond mums. Siegenthaler said customers also turn to rudbeckia, coneflowers, asters, celosia, ornamental peppers, flowering kale and purple fountain grass to refresh porches, patios, hanging baskets and outdoor planters.
