Freeport Weaver Brings Handwoven Work to New Glarus
Peggy Mitchell of Handwoven towels, shawls and scarves made on 8-shaft looms will be among the work featured at New Glarus Art in the Park, where Thumprintz Designs will showcase pieces built on design, color and craftsmanship.
For Peggy Mitchell, weaving is not just the final fabric. It is the designing, the color choices, the careful setup, the repeated checking and the long hours at the loom that slowly bring an idea to life.
Mitchell, of Freeport, Illinois, is the artist behind Thumprintz Designs, a business she started in 2000. She will bring her handwoven towels, shawls and scarves to New Glarus Art in the Park this August.
Although Thumprintz Designs began with hand-painted glassware and entertaining-related pieces, Mitchell’s creative focus shifted in 2020.
“Covid changed things and I also changed what I produced for my business,” Mitchell said.
That year, she began weaving fabric on a small rigid heddle loom. It did not take long for her to want more complexity.
