When the Green Bay Packers open their season Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Vikings, millions of fans across Wisconsin will settle in to watch one of professional sports’ most storied franchises begin another chase for a championship.

And just below General Manager Brian Gutekunst in the Packers’ player personnel department will be a man who grew up only a few miles west of New Glarus.

Milt Hendrickson, a Blanchardville native and Pecatonica High School graduate, begins his first season as the Packers’ vice president of player personnel after being promoted this spring. The position places the former small-town athlete, teacher and coach among the highest-ranking football executives at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.

For New Glarus residents of a certain age, however, Hendrickson may first be remembered for wearing the colors of a rival.
