Gardeners in New Glarus are entering the final few weeks before frost becomes a regular concern, but there is no frost threat in the current forecast. The Wisconsin State Climatology Office puts Green County’s average first 32-degree freeze at Oct. 10.

The National Weather Service forecast for New Glarus, updated late Sunday night, calls for an overnight low near 42 degrees heading into Monday, followed by nighttime lows ranging from the mid-50s to mid-60s through Saturday. In other words, the season’s cooler nights are becoming noticeable, but temperatures are still comfortably above frost levels.

Frost, however, does not require the official air temperature to reach 32 degrees. The National Weather Service says frost can begin forming when measured air temperatures are roughly 33 to 36 degrees if winds are light and other conditions are favorable. A freeze occurs at 32 degrees or colder, while a hard freeze generally means 28 degrees or colder.
