Girls Flag Football May Be Closer to New Glarus Than You Think

A five-team Madison-area girls flag football league already includes nearby Verona, while statewide participation is surging and WIAA sanctioning is under review. New Glarus could have opponents, funding and a workable path sooner than many realize.

Girls Flag Football May Be Closer to New Glarus Than You Think
Girls flag football is gaining momentum in Wisconsin as more high schools launch teams and nearby schools in Verona and Madison have already formed a league, putting the sport closer to New Glarus than many may realize.

Girls flag football may be closer to New Glarus than many people realize. Five nearby high schools — Verona Area plus Madison East, Madison West, Madison La Follette and Vel Phillips (née Madison) Memorial — already played in an organized league this year.

Madison School & Community Recreation launched the league in June with Sunday afternoon games on Sundays during the entire month of June. All four Madison high schools fielded teams, and Verona joined the league from outside the district, creating a five-school cluster within easy reach of New Glarus.

The Green Bay Packers’ statewide girls flag football database lists all four Madison teams as spring programs. Verona already has a team formed, as does Beloit Memorial, and both are looking for opponents and say they are open to playing in any season.

That matters because New Glarus would not necessarily have to wait for girls flag football to become a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) sport. The WIAA’s 2026-27 handbook says member schools may conduct interscholastic competition in sports the association does not recognize, although WIAA rules and regulations do not govern those sports.
