Through community service, 4-H helps young people develop responsibility and leadership while making a difference close to home. New Glarus 4-H Club members are pictured removing litter along a local highway, helping keep their community clean and beautiful for everyone.

Green County 4-H will celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 4-10 with activities aimed at introducing more young people and families to the organization, including a free “Explore 4-H Day” open house Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Green County Fairgrounds in Monroe.

The drop-in event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds, 2600 10th St. Children and parents will be able to learn about 4-H, try hands-on activities and explore the range of programs available through Green County 4-H.

The organization currently includes more than 545 youth members and 150 adult volunteers in Green County. It is administered locally through the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension.

For families in the New Glarus area, 4-H is not limited to agriculture or children who live on farms. Membership is open to youth from 5-year-old kindergarten through high school, whether they live in a city, village or rural area. Green County has 15 community clubs, including clubs serving New Glarus, Belleville and Monticello.
