Harvest Fest Demonstrators Bring Old Skills to Life

From an 80-pound wheel of Swiss cheese to the ring of a blacksmith’s anvil, Harvest Fest will fill the Swiss Historical Village with people demonstrating the skills, crafts and music that helped shape life in New Glarus and Green County.

Harvest Fest Demonstrators Bring Old Skills to Life

The Swiss Historical Village & Museum will turn its attention from artifacts to the people who know how to use them Sunday, Oct. 11, as Harvest Fest brings traditional crafts, music and hands-on demonstrations to the museum grounds in New Glarus.

The annual event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 612 7th Ave. What began years ago around a cheesemaking demonstration has grown into one of the museum’s largest annual events, with craftspeople, historians and musicians stationed throughout the grounds to show how earlier generations worked, made food and household goods, and kept community traditions alive.

This year’s demonstrations will include cheesemaking, blacksmithing, rope making, weaving, rug and broom making, sauerkraut making, beekeeping, brätzli making, handle making, carving, pottery, spinning, corn shelling and scherenschnitte, the traditional Swiss art of paper cutting. Civil War interpretation, firefighting history, genealogy, school history and native plants will also be represented.
