After months of detours, construction and questions from motorists, the Highway 69 project between New Glarus and Monroe is entering its final stages with a current contract cost of nearly $7.8 million and a Nov. 1 completion deadline.
In an interview with New Glarus 360, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Project Manager Adam Kopp provided a closer look at why portions of the highway had to be completely closed, what crews have accomplished, the safety issues created by motorists using alternate routes and what remains after the bridge and new County C roundabout reopen.
“The project is on schedule,” Kopp said. The roundabout and bridge are expected to open to traffic Friday, Aug. 28, after which milling and paving of the main Highway 69 roadway will take place under flagging operations.
Kopp said the current contract cost is $7,781,725.34 and remains within budget.
Closing Highway 69 Was the Only Practical Option
One of the biggest questions surrounding the project has been why WisDOT completely closed the highway rather than maintaining traffic through construction.
