New Glarus Beer Gets a Literary Cameo in ‘Under Story’
Chloe Benjamin’s new novel takes readers from Wisconsin to Antarctica, but amid its bigger questions of science, grief and time, a familiar local name quietly appears twice as part of the author’s broader affection for the state she loves.
New Glarus has turned up in an unexpected place: the pages of one of this fall’s major literary releases. In Chloe Benjamin’s new novel, “Under Story,” the phrase “New Glarus beer” appears. Twice.
Benjamin folds the references naturally into the novel’s Wisconsin world. She does not name Spotted Cow or another individual beer. Instead, she uses “New Glarus beer,” allowing the New Glarus name itself to carry the reference and giving local readers an instantly recognizable touchstone.
That makes the cameo notable because of the book and author carrying it. “Under Story,” published Sept. 1 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons, was selected as a Good Morning America Book Club pick. Benjamin’s previous novel, “The Immortalists,” was a New York Times bestseller, and her work has been translated into more than 30 languages.
