New Glarus Cost of Living Draws National Attention
A national financial publication says New Glarus costs about 8% more than the U.S. average, even as local home values remain below the national figure. Most of its numbers appear accurate, though its rental comparison is less precise locally.
New Glarus is in the national press again, this time in an article examining whether living in “America’s Little Switzerland” is as affordable as outsiders might expect.
Money Digest published an article July 14 titled “America’s ‘Little Switzerland’ Has a Cost of Living That Might Surprise You.” The story introduces readers to New Glarus’ Swiss heritage before examining housing, groceries, utilities, transportation and recreational expenses.
According to figures cited by Money Digest from Salary.com, the overall cost of living in New Glarus is about 8% higher than the national average. The website estimates monthly living expenses of approximately $2,664 for a single person and $5,866 for a family of four.
Housing accounts for much of that difference. Salary.com estimates New Glarus housing costs are about 8.1% higher than the national average, while food, energy, transportation and health care costs are reported to be below national averages.
