Small Acts Make a Big Difference at the New Glarus Home

New Glarus Home is seeking more volunteers to help residents across skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living through visits, activities, transportation, hospice companionship, pet visits, technology help and special events.

Small Acts Make a Big Difference at the New Glarus Home

A conversation, a drive through the countryside or an extra set of hands at bingo may seem like a small gesture. At the New Glarus Home, however, those moments can bring companionship, independence and a welcome change of pace to a resident’s day.

Rachel Hendrickson, Community Wellness Coordinator for the New Glarus Home said volunteers contribute something different from the care provided by employees: a personal connection with someone who has chosen to spend time with a resident.

“Most of it’s just building that rapport and the connection with the residents, and just a little bit of sunshine in their day,” Hendrickson said.

Volunteers may visit and talk with residents, help with bingo, paint nails, assist with crafts, provide rides to local stores or take residents outside for a walk. Some residents enjoy simply going for a drive through the countryside, where familiar roads and places can bring back memories.
