New Glarus Hotel Master Chef Cow Returns Home to New Glarus
After a temporary stay in Paoli during construction, the New Glarus Hotel’s “Master Chef Cow” has returned home to New Glarus, completing a symbolic homecoming tied to Hans Lenzlinger and the community’s beloved painted-cow tradition.
A familiar piece of New Glarus history has been repatriated after spending time away from New Glarus while construction moved forward at the New Glarus Hotel & Restaurant.
The hotel’s original painted cow, known as Master Chef Cow, was temporarily relocated to Paoli so it would not interfere with crews working on the extensive restoration of the historic downtown building at 100 6th Ave.
Last week, the cow returned to New Glarus as part of a special exchange involving the Hans Lenzlinger family. Master Chef Cow now stands outside the former home of longtime New Glarus Hotel owner Hans Lenzlinger, who designed the cow and helped bring the village’s distinctive painted-cow tradition to life.
"The hotel's original cow is now home with the Lenzlinger family, where she truly belongs," said Christina Bleifuss, managing member and president of New Glarus Hotel & Restaurant.
