New Glarus Native Jesse Saunders Helps No. 5 Win at Kansas
Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team delivered its strongest Chase performance yet Sunday at Kansas, putting New Glarus native Jesse Saunders and the crew in an even stronger position with six races left in NASCAR’s title fight.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — New Glarus native Jesse Saunders and the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team left Kansas Speedway on Sunday with a victory, a maximum-points day and a much larger lead in NASCAR’s championship race.
Kyle Larson won the Hollywood Casino 400 after retaking the lead from Chase Briscoe with seven laps remaining. The victory was Larson’s second in the first four races of The Chase and widened his championship lead from one point to 26 over Denny Hamlin with six races left.
The No. 5 Chevrolet dominated most of the afternoon. Larson won both stages, led 235 of 267 laps — a Kansas Speedway record — and posted the fastest lap of the race. Those accomplishments gave the team the maximum 76 points available Sunday, according to NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports.
Larson had to earn the finish late. Briscoe passed him for the lead on Lap 238, but Larson stayed close as the run developed and reclaimed the top spot on Lap 261. Austin Cindric finished second, Hamlin third and Briscoe fourth.
