A crisp October evening, a glowing bonfire and autumn woods will come together at New Glarus Woods State Park, where a Friends group event offers a simple way to enjoy fall outdoors again as the season settles over southern Wisconsin.

New Glarus Woods Fall Bonfire Set for Oct. 17

New Glarus Woods State Park will host a Fall Bonfire from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, giving local residents a chance to mark the season with s’mores, cider and a fire amid the park’s autumn woods.

The event, presented by the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park, is part of a broader slate of fall activities highlighted this week by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas across Wisconsin.

Participants should meet at the Day Use Shelter at 6 p.m. Parking is available on the east side of the park, north of the entrance station. Organizers ask visitors not to park in the area next to the shelter along County NN and to leave pets at home. An annual or daily state park vehicle admission pass is required, and the event will be held weather permitting.

New Glarus Woods State Park, at W5508 County Highway NN, covers 435 acres and offers camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing. The park also connects directly to the 24-mile Sugar River State Trail.
