On the Horizon is a new weekly column that will look beyond the immediate headlines to examine the larger forces likely to shape New Glarus in the years ahead. Appearing each Saturday evening, the column will focus on developments that may not yet be widely discussed locally but could soon influence how we live, work, shop, travel, learn and govern.

The subjects will range from emerging technologies and economic trends to demographic shifts, changing consumer habits, new government policies and major transformations in agriculture, transportation, energy, health care and education. Some changes may arrive gradually. Others may move much faster than communities expect.

Each installment will ask how a major national or global development could eventually reach New Glarus. What might it mean for local businesses, schools, farms, government, tourism and residents? What opportunities could it create, what problems could it bring and who should begin preparing now?

The goal is not to predict the future with certainty. It is to recognize the signals already appearing on the horizon and consider what they could mean for New Glarus before those changes arrive at our doorstep.
