Swiss Center Plans Swiss National Day Open House
The Swiss Center of North America will mark Swiss National Day with a free Aug. 2 open house in New Glarus featuring collection tours, refreshments and the debut of a searchable digital catalog containing more than 4,000 historical items.
The Swiss Center of North America will invite the public to celebrate Swiss National Day during a free open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at 507 Durst Road in New Glarus.
The afternoon will offer community members, families, history enthusiasts and people with Swiss heritage an opportunity to explore the center and learn more about Switzerland’s history and the legacy of Swiss immigrants in North America.
Swiss National Day commemorates the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291, when representatives of three Alpine cantons formed an alliance that became the foundation of modern Switzerland. Aug. 1 has been officially observed as Switzerland’s national holiday since 1891.
Celebrations are held throughout Switzerland and in Swiss communities around the world, including New Glarus, which remains closely connected to the heritage of the Swiss immigrants who founded the village.
