Two New Glarus High School seniors, Emilia Rood and Eli Smith, have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the honors Wednesday.
Rood and Smith earned the recognition after taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as the initial screening process for the competition.
More than 1.2 million students from approximately 20,000 high schools entered the program. The nationwide group of more than 16,000 semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
The two New Glarus students now have an opportunity to advance in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth a combined $24 million. The scholarships will be awarded beginning next spring.
