Beat Schmid Named Swiss Consul General in Chicago
Switzerland’s new Midwest representative points to New Glarus as part of a shared Swiss-American story that still shapes culture, business and identity across the region.
CHICAGO, Ill. — Beat Schmid has been named the new consul general of Switzerland in Chicago, taking over the post that represents Swiss interests across Wisconsin and much of the Midwest.
Schmid replaces Pascal Bornoz, who left Chicago to become Switzerland’s ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Haiti and St. Kitts and Nevis, based in Santo Domingo.
The leadership change matters in New Glarus, where the relationship with the Swiss Consulate General in Chicago has long been more than symbolic. New Glarus is one of the Midwest’s most visible Swiss-American communities, and the consulate has maintained a close connection with the village through cultural visits, heritage events and shared efforts to promote Swiss history and identity.
On the consulate’s website, Schmid specifically mentions New Glarus while describing the Swiss footprint in the Midwest.
