Belleville Tornado Confirmed as EF1; Recovery Efforts Continue
The National Weather Service has formally classified Wednesday evening’s Belleville tornado as an EF1, with a damage path nearly 3 miles long and approximately 300 yards wide. Local officials say recovery efforts remain underway as debris removal and damage assessments continue.
BELLEVILLE, Wis. — The National Weather Service office in Sullivan has officially determined that the tornado that struck Belleville on Wednesday evening was an EF1 tornado, confirming what residents and emergency responders witnessed firsthand as the storm carved a path through the community.
According to the preliminary survey, the tornado remained on the ground for nearly 3 miles and reached a maximum width of approximately 300 yards.
An EF1 tornado falls within the lower end of the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which rates tornadoes based on the damage they cause. EF1 tornadoes typically produce estimated winds between 86 and 110 mph and are capable of tearing roofing materials from homes, overturning mobile homes, snapping large tree branches, uprooting shallow-rooted trees and causing significant damage to outbuildings and garages.
The tornado struck the northeast side of Belleville around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, damaging homes, trees and utility infrastructure. Village officials previously reported that multiple homes sustained damage, including some with portions of their roofs torn away. At least two families were displaced by the storm, though no injuries were reported.
