Brock Weeden Gives New Glarus a Big Leg on Special Teams

The 6-foot-3 freshman has already become a weapon on special teams for New Glarus, combining a strong leg, touchback power and unusual confidence with the kind of range that can change how the Glarner Knights approach the field each week.

Brock Weeden is only a freshman, but New Glarus is already asking him to handle one of football’s most specialized jobs. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Weeden has emerged as the Glarner Knights’ kicker and punter while also starting at cornerback and seeing occasional time at receiver.

His kicking numbers have made the biggest impression. Weeden is 29-for-32 on extra points and 3-for-5 on field goals this season, with a long of 45 yards. He also has 23 touchbacks on kickoffs, repeatedly giving opponents long fields to begin possessions.

The leg strength is not a recent discovery. Weeden said he first learned to kick in second grade, spending his brother’s practice time kicking footballs against the brown bus garage in Monticello. Years later, that repetition has turned into legitimate range. “My furthest field goal is a 62-yarder,” Weeden said.

For all the distance, Weeden said his approach is intentionally simple. “When I line up to kick I think good snap, good hold and good kick,” he said. He credits holder Quinn Marty and snapper Tucker Sysko for making the operation work, saying he would not be able to do it without them.
