Community Update: 6/18/2026

There are certain smells that tell us a season has arrived long before the calendar does. The scent of freshly cut alfalfa is one of them. It drifts across southern Wisconsin on warm June breezes, settling into back roads, village neighborhoods and open car windows. For many of us, it is as much a part of summer as baseball games, county fairs and long evenings that seem reluctant to give way to darkness.

There is less alfalfa grown here today than there was a generation ago. The landscape has changed, farms have changed and agriculture has evolved. Yet every year, when the first crop is cut and windrows begin appearing across the countryside, that familiar aroma returns. It carries with it memories of childhood bike rides past hayfields, family drives through the countryside and a time when nearly every horizon seemed framed by fields waiting for harvest. More than just the smell of forage, it is the smell of another Wisconsin summer beginning.

Something We Noticed

One of the more unexpected moments at this year's Roger Bright Memorial Polkafest came when the band The DB Polka Express launched into a polka inspired cover of Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine. Before the crowd had much time to process what it had just heard, the music shifted seamlessly into the Beer Barrel Polka.

Would Roger Bright have approved? Would Axl Rose? We will never know. But judging by the smiles, laughter, and a few puzzled looks around the dance floor, it was certainly one of the weekend's more memorable musical moments.
