Homecoming night began with a scare for New Glarus, but it ended with another convincing win. The Glarner Knights shook off an early score from its competitor and a first-quarter interceptions, scored 35 unanswered points and pulled away from Southwestern-East Dubuque for a 42-13 victory Friday at The Bank of New Glarus Field.
With clear skies and 56 degrees at kickoff after a beautiful fall day, New Glarus entered 5-1 while the WarCats came in 0-6. The visitors immediately made the night uncomfortable for the Homecoming crowd.
On the first series of the game, Southwestern-East Dubuque came out fighting and marched down the field scoring on an 11-play, 87-yard drive capped by a Lucas Foley touchdown run, and the extra point put the WarCats ahead 7-0 with 5:14 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing series, New Glarus quarterback Quinn Marty was hit and threw an interception giving Southwestern-East Dubuque another opportunity to score, but this time the New Glarus defense held. The WarCats eventually pinned the Glarner Knights at their own 1-yard line, setting up the drive that changed the feel of the game.
