The New Glarus Glarner Knights had been finding their rhythm over the past several weeks, but Marshall proved to be a difficult obstacle Tuesday night as the Cardinals handed New Glarus a 3-1 loss during Homecoming week in the friendly confines of the New Glarus High School gymnasium.
New Glarus opened the match with a 25-21 victory, giving the home crowd an early lift and putting the Glarner Knights one set away from taking firm control. Marshall answered in the second, however, winning 25-16 to even the match.
The third set was the turning point. New Glarus stayed within striking distance throughout, but Marshall closed out a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 advantage. The Cardinals then pulled away in the fourth set, 25-10, to finish the match.
The loss came after one of New Glarus’ strongest stretches of the season. The Knights went 5-0 at the Brodhead Volleyball Invite on Sept. 12, then returned home and swept Wisconsin Heights 3-0 on Senior Night. Two days later, they beat rival Belleville 3-1 in a charged Highway 69 matchup.
