Green County Jail Construction Moves Ahead of Schedule
Concrete is now going into the ground for Green County’s long-planned replacement jail and law enforcement center in Monroe, with the massive public project running slightly ahead of schedule as crews work toward a 2028 opening date.
MONROE, Wis. — Construction on Green County’s new jail and law enforcement center has moved from site preparation into foundation work, with Sheriff Cody Kanable saying the project is currently about 2½ weeks ahead of schedule.
Crews are pouring concrete for footings and foundations, and Kanable estimated roughly three-quarters of the jail footings are complete. The jail portion will take longer than other parts of the complex because of the extensive security systems, electronics, plumbing, doors and other requirements governed by Wisconsin Department of Corrections standards.
Kanable said his goal is to begin moving inmates into the new facility around Labor Day 2028. He described the construction itself as roughly a two-year process, following months of earlier site work and soil remediation.
The project carries a guaranteed maximum project budget of $85 million. Green County previously authorized borrowing of up to $86.13 million for the jail and law enforcement center, and county officials have said the eventual tax impact will depend on the final amount borrowed, interest rates, changes in property values and other factors. In March, the county said its best estimate was that once the full debt is reflected on tax bills in 2028, it could add about $1 to the county portion of the mill rate.
