MONROE, Wis. — Green County supervisors postponed a decision Tuesday night on a long-term Highway Department facility after a lengthy presentation and debate over five options ranging from a partial build-out to a complete new campus at Pleasant View.

The unanimous vote to delay action until the board’s next meeting came after supervisors rejected an earlier attempt to narrow the field to Options 1 and 2 and send those choices back to committee. Supervisors said they wanted more time to digest the information and speak with constituents before committing to a project that could cost as much as $48.5 million.

The presentation was the third and final installment in a months-long review of the Highway Department’s space needs. County Administrator Nic Owen, Maintenance and Property Director Dick Marti, Highway Department staff and a representative from Kraemer Brothers walked supervisors through the department’s history, current operating problems, construction costs and projected tax effects.

The department’s Monroe site has shrunk from about 20 acres to 5.5 acres over time, most recently losing land to the new jail and law enforcement center project. A facilities study first completed in 2021 and revisited in 2025 estimated that about 18 acres would be needed for a fully functional Highway Department campus.
