MONROE, Wis. — Green County’s Highway Committee meets at 4 p.m. Monday for what appears on paper to be a remarkably simple meeting: one substantive agenda item, “Recommendation to Board on Highway Long-Term Highway Facility Plan.” But that recommendation could move one of the county’s largest proposed capital projects in years directly toward a decision by the full County Board.
The long-term plan under consideration centers on a proposed new Highway Department campus near Pleasant View Nursing Home on Monroe’s north side. Previous estimates placed the total project cost between $42.2 million and $48.5 million, including roughly $38.3 million to $44.1 million in construction costs and another $3.9 million to $4.4 million in owner soft costs.
The County Board has not approved the project, a final site or borrowing. In June, supervisors stopped short of taking those steps, instead allowing planning to continue while they sought more information about financing, long-term debt and the financial impact on taxpayers.
Monday’s Highway Committee agenda does not spell out the exact recommendation members will consider, nor does it list a new cost estimate. Its wording does, however, signal that the committee is preparing to send a long-term facility recommendation to the County Board rather than simply continue an informational discussion.
