Historic Photo: New Glarus Takes on ‘The Music Man’
A 1981 New Glarus High School production of “The Music Man” brought students together on stage as residents of fictional River City, Iowa, complete with period costumes, painted storefronts and some familiar New Glarus faces from more than four decades ago.
The photograph captures members of the cast of New Glarus High School’s 1981 production of “The Music Man,” the Meredith Willson musical set in 1912 Iowa. With much of the cast identified only by first names in surviving information, New Glarus 360 is asking readers to help complete the story.
At the center of the production were Tony Wieser as traveling salesman Harold Hill and Faye Streiff as Marian Paroo. Bill Meland played Charlie Cowell, while Beth Holmes appeared as Mrs. Paroo.
Other surviving cast information is less complete. Phillip Marty played Marcellus Washburn, while Alan Hoesly and Karla Nodorft portrayed Tommy Djilas and Zaneeta Shinn. Tim Nybroten played Winthrop Paroo, and Becky Anderson appeared as Amaryllis.
