On a recent afternoon, Hawkins Hulburt, 4, and Aliza Hulburt, 10, both of New Glarus, along with their friend Autumn Chapman, 11, formerly of New Glarus, spent part of their day operating a lemonade stand along Durst Road.
In just two hours, the young entrepreneurs earned more than $25, thanks to the generosity of neighbors and passersby. Several community members also stopped to purchase a cold cup of homemade lemonade, priced at $1 each.
While lemonade stands may appear simple on the surface, they offer valuable lessons that extend far beyond earning spending money. Children learn about investing in supplies, setting prices, promoting their stand and interacting with customers. Just as importantly, they develop confidence, responsibility and an understanding of the connection between effort and reward.
