New Glarus Cleans Up After Severe Storm
Wednesday’s storm left New Glarus cleaning up downed trees, power line hazards, outages and event cancellations, with more severe weather possible today as crews prepare for Beer, Bacon & Cheese and Polkafest weekend.
New Glarus residents, utility crews and emergency responders spent Wednesday evening and Thursday morning cleaning up after a fast-moving severe storm brought heavy rain, high winds, downed trees and scattered power outages across the village and surrounding area.
The storm moved through Green County on Wednesday afternoon, leaving behind damage in New Glarus and across the region just as the community was preparing for one of its busiest weekends of the summer.
Rain totals from Precip.com showed New Glarus received 1.04 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 4:40 a.m. Thursday. That brought the community’s month-to-date total to 3.55 inches, adding more water to already soggy ground as wind brought down trees and limbs.
Around New Glarus, damage reports included uprooted and fallen trees throughout the village and surrounding roads. Some older trees on the north side of New Glarus Village Park sustained heavy damage, and scanner traffic throughout the afternoon included reports of power lines down, trees blocking roads, a transformer issue, branches on wires and trees falling onto homes.
