New Glarus Defense Shuts Out Rival Belleville
After a scoreless first half, New Glarus broke through on fourth down, leaned on a dominant defense and got a 45-yard field goal from freshman Brock Weeden to beat rival Belleville 10-0 Friday night in the 77th meeting between the programs.
New Glarus and Belleville spent most of Friday night trading hard hits, punts, turnovers and missed opportunities. In the end, the Glarner Knights found just enough offense and played more than enough defense.
New Glarus scored on its opening possession of the second half, stopped Belleville near the goal line to begin the fourth quarter and forced three second-half turnovers on the way to a 10-0 victory over its longtime rival at The Bank of New Glarus Field.
The win improved New Glarus to 2-0 and gave the Knights their fourth consecutive victory over Belleville. It was the 44th New Glarus victory in a series that now stands at 44-31-2 in favor of the Knights.
It was also a game that looked and felt like a rivalry. Played on a beautiful late-August evening before a large home crowd, the game became increasingly physical and chippy as neither team gave much ground.
